Clarion Events - owners of the DSEi arms fair

In 2008 Reed Elsevier has disposed of its five international arms fairs, with the last three, including London's DSEi arms fair, being sold to Clarion Events in May 2008. Learn more about DSEi.

Reed Elsevier's sale of DSEi was entirely a result of ethical concerns and, as such, was a blow to those trying to portray arms fairs as a legitimate business. Reed's withdrawal was evidence of the strength and breadth of feeling about the issue. We now have to make this public distaste tangible to Clarion.

In 2008 Clarion was new to the arms business. However, it has since proved itself to be an enthusiastic supporter of arms fairs, adding to its portfolio and joining the Defence Manufacturers Association - showing that Clarion is happy to see itself as an arms trader.

Dear Mr Kimble, I would like to express my concern at Clarion Events involvement in hosting arms fairs. These events allow companies to promote weapons to countries engaged in conflict, and directly fuel conflict around the world. Many of the countries invited to arms fairs have appalling human rights records. Of the 53 countries who were invited to attend DSEi 2009, at least 15 have serious conflict and human rights concerns or urgent development needs. They include Algeria, Angola, Bahrain, Colombia, India, Indonesia, Iraq, Libya, Morocco, Pakistan, Peru, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey and Vietnam. Arms fairs promote arms to countries that have major development needs, diverting funds from vital public services such as water, health or housing. By organising arms fairs, Clarion Events shows itself to be an unethical company. I therefore urge you to immediately discontinue Clarion Event's involvement in the promotion and distribution of arms. Yours sincerely,
