Get Involved - Local Campaigning

Campaigning ideas

CAAT's campaigns are effective because people like you take co-ordinated action around the country. Take action now or why not think about taking on one of the following campaigning roles with CAAT?

Campaigning with CAAT

You can get more involved in the campaign in any of these ways:

Take action online
Whatever websites you use, news you read, emails you send, or social networks you are involved in, there are lots of creative ways you can support CAAT online.

Keep your eye out for opportunities to let others know about our campaigns and events, to put your views on the arms trade across and to encourage people to visit the CAAT website. Here's just a few ideas to get you started:

  • Take CAAT's online actions and encourage others to do so too
  • Put a link to CAAT's website in the footer of your emails saying why you support us
  • If you spot something about the arms trade that makes you angry, or take part in an action you want to publicise, then write about it! Contact with contributions for the CAAT blog
  • If you have a blog, or a profile on MySpace, then link to our website too. Become a fan of our Page on Facebook as well!
  • Follow us on Twitter and sign up for our RSS feed.
  • Add your thoughts to the comments section when you see news articles about the arms trade online.

As well as Facebook , Twitter and our blog, CAAT now has a presence on Bebo , Flickr , Demotix , Jaiku , Live Journal , Vox , Tmblr , reddit and stumbleupon . Find us there!

Join or start a local CAAT group
Our supporters achieve a lot on their own, but can be even more ambitious and creative when they work together!

London CAAT group run a campaign stall

Join a group
There are local CAAT groups in many areas around the UK. They organise protests and meetings, conduct research on local arms companies, lobby their MPs and help promote CAAT's main campaigns. Details of local groups can be found in this section of the website.

Start a group
If you would like to start a group, you will not be alone. CAAT can offer you the following support:

  • The Local Campaigns Co-ordinator or Local Campaigns Assistant will stay in phone and email contact with you, so you have someone to talk to about your ideas and concerns.
  • We can contact CAAT supporters in your area and invite them to get involved.
  • We can provide workshops and speakers to help launch the group.
  • We can provide ongoing training and mentoring to help your group be a success!
  • More ideas can be found on pages 4-5 of the Local Campaigns Guide PDF (1MB)

Become a CAAT Local Contact

Act as a contact for CAAT supporters in your area. Co-ordinate local campaign activities or keep a local campaign group updated on CAAT's work. CAAT local contacts do what they can to raise the profile of CAAT, often in areas where there isn't an active local group.

We are always on the look-out for people to be CAAT local contacts in areas we haven't already got covered. This doesn't mean you would suddenly have to do loads of work - the role can be adapted to suit you.

For ideas of what some Local Contacts get up to, see page 19 of the Local Campaigns Guide PDF (1MB)

Become a CAAT Key Campaigner

Receive campaigner updates from CAAT and help spread the word about CAAT by receiving multiple copies of our materials to distribute in your area and put up on church or community centre notice boards.

Join the CAAT Speakers Network

Raise awareness about CAAT and get people campaigning by committing to arrange at least three talks a year. Whether you are an experienced public speaker, or have never spoken in public before, we will provide training and information to help you to do so!

If you join the network, we will ask you to:

  • Attend a speakers' training
  • Pro-actively look for at least three opportunities a year to speak for CAAT to groups such as trade union branches, schools, local campaign groups and faith institutions.
  • Complete a feedback form and send it to us after each talk you deliver.

We will support you with:

  • A day's training and skillshare session once a year
  • A speakers pack, with talk outlines and sample powerpoint presentations
  • Advice from the CAAT office

We will also occasionally contact you with requests for speakers that have come to the CAAT office.
