CAAT Equal Opportunities Statement

All persons involved in the day-to-day work of Campaign Against Arms Trade, including volunteers, staff and Steering Committee, are asked to accept the following policy.

1. Persons involved in any respect with the Campaign Against Arms Trade have a right not to be harassed, prejudiced or discriminated against on any grounds.

2. Campaign Against Arms Trade is continually striving towards an office, and wider campaign, environment that is equal, safe and comfortable for all those involved with the organisation. This includes staff, volunteers, supporters, local contacts, groups, management and one-off visitors/participants in CAAT work. This striving should be manifest in CAAT's day-to-day work, its decision making, its recruitment, its campaign work and its liaison with groups and individuals. CAAT will attempt to make all open meetings accessible for those with disabilities.

3. In recruitment of staff and volunteers, those involved in the process will strive to recruit persons on merit alone, referring to point 1 of this statement. It should be recognised that the need for a balance and diverse organisation will inform both where job adverts are placed, and the tone of the advert. Those involved in recruitment will strive to create a recruitment process that is fully inclusive, recognising that interview technique, assumptions, written material and advertising can exclude persons at every stage.

4. Recognising that language and visual imagery influence perceptions, CAAT will guard against making assumptions and exclusive language in all its published material, including press and media releases, images, posters, banners, its newsletter, leaflets, briefings, reports, appeals and letters.

5. Persons involved with CAAT have the right not to be harassed in any aspect of the organisation's work. Harassment may include unwelcome comments, looks, actions, materials, suggestions or physical contact that creates an intimidating environment.

6. Persons involved with CAAT have the right to be given respect if they choose to disclose any information regarding their personal identity. They should also have the right to be provided with respect, if they choose not to disclose such information.

7. CAAT will actively strive to implement policy, through its normal structures, aimed at improving access to the organisation with reference to point 1.

8. CAAT Steering Committee will be asked to review and endorse this policy as well as to review its implementation annually.

Endorsed by CAAT Steering Committee - December 1998.
Amended and confirmed by CAAT Steering Committee - July 2006.
