Job Description

Campaign Against Arms Trade (CAAT) is a UK-wide campaigning organisation. All aspects of CAAT's external work are dependent on our online presence: from campaigning, through the recruitment and retention of supporters, to fundraising. CAAT is looking for a technically capable and campaign-minded person to develop the CAAT website to meet the needs of all these activities and for it to be fully integrated into relevant social networking applications. It is a new staff post.

The post holder will be responsible for the planning and implementation of CAAT's online presence. This will include:

1. Redevelopment of CAAT's website
    The postholder will:
  • Create a new website that meets organisational needs. This may be done by the postholder and/or by managing external contractors. We hope that the website will move to a Content Management System
  • Assess and make recommendations on the potential for integration of supporter information systems into the website, and manage any implementation required
2. Development of online presence
    On an ongoing basis, the post holder will:
  • Contribute to the planning of each area of CAAT's work to identify how it can best be enhanced by online activities
  • Maintain an overview of CAAT's online presence so that the different elements of CAAT's work are integrated online
  • Keep abreast of technological developments and online trends and apply to CAAT's work those that will increase its effectiveness
  • Oversee and develop CAAT's bulk supporter email communications
3. Website management
    The postholder will:
  • Ensure the website is fully integrated into the wider CAAT online presence
  • Maximise accessibility of the website to a diversity of users
  • Oversee content uploaded to the site
  • Develop the ability of CAAT staff and volunteers to update content and provide effective content, providing appropriate systems, training and documentation
  • Develop and promote the website to increase traffic from target audiences
  • Ensure that analysis and reporting of site usage is undertaken
  • Ensure website contractors are fully briefed and effectively managed
  • Improve performance of the website and maintain its availability
4. Organisational role
    With other staff, the post holder will:
  • Share responsibility for campaign planning and organisational strategy
  • Be responsible for supervising volunteers undertaking relevant areas of work
  • Share the day-to-day running and administration of the CAAT office, which works as a collective
  • Cover for other staff members during holidays and other absences
  • Be a member of the CAAT Steering Committee, which has ultimate responsibility for the organisation

 

Person Specification

EXPERIENCE

Essential:

  • Experience of developing and maintaining web sites using W3C standards compliant XHTML and CSS
  • Experience of having commissioned and managed web designers and developers to work on specific projects
  • Experience of using online tools to campaign for change, for example, Louder, writetothem, facebook, mailing services
  • Experience of successfully working in teams
  • Display effective communication skills
  • Ability to identify and resolve problems
Desirable:
  • Google analytics or equivalent
  • Experience of providing training
  • Good knowledge of IT security practice
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

Essential:

  • Knowledge of holistic online campaigning using popular web 2.0 sites such as facebook, twitter etc
  • A good working knowledge of developing websites using (X)HTML and CSS
  • Knowledge of PHP or similar scripting language
  • Knowledge of Content Management Systems – open source or proprietary
  • Knowledge of Javascript
  • Knowledge of SQL and management of MySQL databases
  • Design skills and familiarity with an image manipulation package such as Photoshop or GIMP
  • A sound knowledge and understanding of web site design, information architecture, functional operation and accessibility issues
  • A good eye for design
  • Ability to motivate and supervise volunteers in an office environment
  • Proven ability to meet a variety of organisational needs and competing priorities, and to meet deadlines
Desirable:
  • Knowledge and understanding of the arms trade
  • Experience of being systems administrator for a web server
