Asylum and immigration are top political issues, but very little attention has been
paid to why migrants and asylum seekers leave their homes. Some do so willingly, but
in many cases people have to flee conflict, repression or poverty.
Often, the UK government or UK-based companies are directly or indirectly
responsible. Millions have been forced from their homes as a result of UK-backed
infrastructure projects, such as dams and oil pipelines, or through the support
that the UK government and companies provide to repressive regimes through the arms trade.
CAAT is a member of the
Refugee Project - a UK coalition of environmental, human rights
and development groups as well as refugees themselves. The Project is working to
document the links between UK foreign investment and the creation of refugees, and to
provide a platform where the latter can tell their stories.
