SAAB has been making jet aircraft since the late 1940s and is now 35%-owned by BAE Systems. SAAB in the UK SAAB has a number of contracts with the UK armed forces, including the supply of laser weapon simulators for the Apache attack helicopter.2 However, SAAB's most obvious interest in the UK is via Gripen International, the BAE Systems/SAAB 50:50 joint venture. Box What it makes The SAAB Group includes SAAB Aerospace which manufactures aircraft, aircraft subsystems including avionics and electronic warfare systems, and SAAB Bofors which produces infantry weapons, underwater systems, and missiles and missile systems. Gripen fighter aircraft Gripen International is a Swedish registered company with a core staff of 70 employees.3 It is headquartered in Stockholm and has offices or representation in Austria, Brazil, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, South Africa, the UK and the US.4 Gripen International acts as a prime contractor and is, with BAE Systems, responsible for marketing, selling and supporting the Gripen fighter aircraft worldwide. The Gripen fighter is in service with the Swedish Air Force and has been selected by South Africa and Hungary. A sale to the Czech Republic was cancelled after the serious floods of summer 2002. The deal had been the subject of US government allegations of corruption. The Gripen was displayed at the 2003 Paris Air Show, with a weapons package reported to include Rafael missiles.5
